I am able to use Image capture by opening the Image Capture app directly and selecting my MX882 - which appears there by wifi. You are right that the "scan" button doesn't appear anymore through the Printers and Scanners part of System Preferences.
Same problem here with a Pixma MX 882. I've been with Canon technical support twice. They aren't going to update these drivers. So basically a perfectly funcitonal printer/scanner is now useless for scanning. The only solution is to use IOS Image...
