CanoScan LiDE 110: error msg: "Canon MP Navigator EX has stopped working..."

I have tried all the trouble shooting tips from the manual that I am able to understand how to do. Nothing seems to work. Windows 7, 64 bit.  Brand new scanner, out of the box.
