Amen! I am an industrial designer and your comment is on point. This should NOT have been made into production as is. 

Just bought this printer and seeing that it has NO BACKLIGHT on the screen makes me want to throw it in the garbage. I am already vision impaired. Can Canon make such a crappy design? For Pete’s sake, who thinks (or doesn’t) of something so BASIC!
