We have a Canon VIXIA HF G40 Recoder at our school and we want to record our students while they weld. What filter lens do we need for this recorder to make the welding clear?

Don't know what you mean by "clear". Have you tried doing a video with the camera as it is, to see if anything is wrong with what you get?

I take it you have never done any arc welding?

I would use one of the LCD welders mask so you can check subject and focus before the welding.

I know what arc welding is. So you can focus through a welder's mask. What happens when taking a picture without the mask?
Can't exposure be manipulated to get a good shot?

You can't focus through a typical welders mask which is like an eclipse filter. There are newer ones that have an LCD that automagically darkens.

So what do you suggest is a way to take the picture/video?

Use the LCD welders mask. Use the clear view to frame and focus. When the welding starts you may or may not have to adjust the exposure. It is not something I have tried. I have always used the old-school masks.
