Speedlite 580ex ii hss unavailable

Boku

I have a 580ex ii flash. Sometimes the hss option vanishes from the menu and I can't figure out what I'm missing.

How can I consistently access the hss option?

When I press the hss button only the 2nd curtain sync appears.

I reset all custom functions and hss reappeared in the menu. I must have accidentally changed some setting. Thanks guys for your help. I appreciate each and everyone of you.

For reference if you had used the custom function C-Fn 05 to select the metering mode this is the one that stops HSS from being available.

If C-Fn 05 is set to 1, 2, or 3 then high speed sync is not possible, so anything but the default value of 0 stops HSS.

What camera?

What mode?

You might need to be in one of the "non-automatic" modes like P.

I usually shoot manual, but hss doesn't show up in any mode at the moment. Even when the speedlite is off the hotshoe.

Canon 700d

Can you set in the Speedlite Control menu. Also when this happens does the Speedlite say E-TTL or TTL. Old off the film TTL and A-TTL never supported it. Only E-TTL supports it.

It says ETTL

Custom Function 5 on a 700D is mirror lockup.

My apologies I should have been clearer, the custom function C.Fn-05 I was referring to was in the Speedlite 580EX II.
