I am surprised that the compatability for the R5 and R5C is not listed. Can Canon officially confirm it will be supported when released so that I can pre-order??
Thanks!

I concur with Ricky. The shoe on our R5 C's have the updated shoe. Same as the R3. I would not hesitate to pre-order.

It's only compatible with newer cameras (R7,R10,R3,R6II) with multi-function hotshoe.
Per the product page: Important: Because of the transition to Canon’s Multi-function accessory shoe, please be aware that Speedlite EL-5 cannot be mounted or used on Canon cameras with other accessory shoe designs.

Where do you see that? The product page mentions:
I do see the following note, but the list of mentioned cameras would not imply the full list of compatible cameras (just a subset used as an example):
"Gold-plated terminals in the shoe improve connection quality, and the installation status is checked before starting communications, to ensure reliable connection to cameras such as the Canon EOS R3, R7, R10, and R6 Mark Instant Interactive."
I don't yet see a manual for the new flash, or a part of the web site that enumerates all compatible cameras. I image though that if the camera has the more modern hot shoe, it should be ok.

I see this too. It’s just weird they did not call out compatability like they did for: R7,R10,R3,R6II). I am thinking it will need a firmware update to communicate correctly so while we all know the r5c has the newer multifunction shoe; why didn’t they say it’s compatible in all their pre-release??

The r5c has the newer hot shoe. Why isn’t it listed?

It may not necessarily be compatible. Some EOS-M series cameras have a multipurpose hot shoe that allow optional use of an EVF. I don't think any of these cameras are compatible either.

From the EL-5's web page.
Multi function / Multi purpose... check, check 👍

The Canon El-1 and EL-100 use the older hot shoe design not the newer multi purpose shoe. I believe the manual for the R5C mentions those speedlites.

Have you guys seen this yet?
Canon Multi-function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 | Canon U.S.A., Inc.
For a seamless transition from your current hot shoe accessories to the multi-function shoe, the Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 is the answer. The Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1 provides a reliable connection for dust and drip proof Speedlite accessories that you may already own such as the Speedlite EL-1, Speedlite 600EX II-RT, Speedlite 600EX-RT, Speedlite 580EX II, ST-E3-RT or OC-E3 flash cord. The shoe adapter will also hold current accessories such as shotgun mics and on-camera LED panels securely to the camera body with dual locking pins on the multi-function shoe side.
EL-5 Below
Since the foot on the EL-5 looks like the shoe on my R5 C (and the bottom of this adapter) I still believe the EL-5 will work on the R5 C natively. Its also the same foot that's on the Tascam CA-XLR2d and the Canon DM-E1d mic.
I'm convinced now. 🙂
