I cannot get high speed sync to work

Hi all,

I have an EOS 6D and a Speedlite 580exii. For the life of my I cannot get the high speed sync to work. At anything past the shutter sync speed I get a black bar despite the fact I have enabled the high speed sync mode. I should also note I am using a pocket wizard.

Suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Ditch the pocketwizard.

Get a 90EX to use as a wireless optical flash controller. It supports HSS on a remote flash (though it doesn't do HSS itself).

Canon DLC - Alternatives to the built-in flash: EOS 6D

Thanks for the reply.

I figured out last night that it was the Pocket Wizard that was causing the holdup.

Good to hear you got it to work.

Oh, haha, I didn't get it to work, I just figured out that the Pocket Wizard was my problem and I need a more sophisticated one that can handle it.

Using High Speed Sync is a feature of the E-TTL mode of the flash (in "manual" mode you don't get HSS).  Canon doesn't publish the specs for E-TTL... third parties reverse-engineer it to try to build compatible systems.  That means that whenever you buy a component that supports E-TTL, but isn't made by Canon, there's a risk that it may not necessarily be 100% compatible with all E-TTL features.

Glad you got the problem resolved.

That is really helpful. Thank you! Can you recommend a best product to use instead of the Pocket Wizard?
