EZ flashes on DSLRs

Can you use EZ series flashes (430EZ, 540EZ) on newer DSLRs?

Here's what the T5i and 1D Mark IV manuals say.
These are 2009/2010 models. I would expect later models to be the same.

Thank you. I was told once that older flashes would damage the electronics in DSLRs...I wasn't sure if that was true or not.

Some very old ones can because of high trigger voltage. Canon brand wont damage.
