Using a 2x extender

Sometimes I see people advise against using a 2x extender. I frequently use one when there is enough light and I cannot get closer to the subject

Benefits:

  • doubles focus length
  • doubles magnification
  • costs less than a 800mm lens when one already has a 400mm lens
  • Canon extender images can be improved by digital lens optimizer in DPP

Disadvantages:

  • decreases aperture
  • shallow depth of field
  • increases F Number
  • a higher ISO or lower shutter speed will be needed
  • small aperture diffraction blur
