The Wedge is a notorious surf break in southern California that gets its name from the effect of waves bouncing off a jetty and merging (or "wedging") with incoming waves...usually adding a few more feet in height. March 12 was an epic day, even by Wedge standards - 8-10' faces were wedging to 12-15' and there was heavy "churn" (whitewash). Only the best of the best would even attempt to paddle out in those conditions.
