Twice a year, the starlings gather together in preparation for their migration either north or south, depending on the season. With respect to starlings, these gatherings are called Constellations, or Murmurations. I believe they are following the harvests, where there is food to be found among the fallen grain.
They number in the hundreds of thousands and move with one mind. It's a force of nature like the tides.
I live in a flight zone, and watching them pass overhead is a sight to behold. The sound is deafening, and their passing will blot out the sun. You truly do feel like you have "disturbed the peace of the king."

I once saw a migration of birds, too far away to tell the species. Can't begin to guess the width and height of the column but we watched it for several minutes to pass over.
