I was thinking the same thing Rick! Sandstorms would be at the top end of risks. I hope the wind was to his back! Such conditions are where I would use a protective filter to avoid abrasion of the front element of the lens - along with sea salt and other environmental threats to the glass.

I was indoors and only briefly opened the door to get the photo. I do have filters on all my lenses to protect them. This was barely the leading edge of the haboob and within about 2 minutes after this photo I could barely see the HUMVEE and I moved to the interior of the building because the sand was coming into the building around all the cracks around the doors and windows.
