Photographing the Golden-naped Tanager at La Minga Ecolodge near Cali in Valle del Cauca offered one of those rare moments when light, behavior, and environment fall perfectly into place. This Andes resident carries an unforgettable palette, and in this frame the turquoise body, dark wings, and distinct golden patch on the nape were illuminated with just enough soft forest light to reveal their full character.

I created this image with the Canon EOS R5 paired with the RF 800mm F11 IS STM. The long focal length allowed me to work at a respectful distance, letting the bird settle naturally on the branch without disturbance. The forest edge was shaded, but the tanager stepped briefly into an opening where the light dispersed evenly across its feathers. To preserve detail in these conditions, I used 1/500 second to freeze the bird’s subtle movements, an aperture of f/11 inherent to the lens design, and ISO 6400 to maintain exposure without sacrificing shutter speed. This balance kept noise manageable while allowing the fine texture of the plumage to remain visible.

What made this moment special was the calm posture of the bird. Tanagers often move rapidly through the midstory, but here it paused just long enough for the background to soften into a smooth blend of greens. The separation between subject and environment happened naturally through the optical compression of the 800mm lens, creating a clean, uncluttered composition that highlights the species’ unique features.

For me, this photograph reflects the essence of working in the Andean forests. It is a practice of patience, observation, and readiness. The landscape reveals these moments only briefly, and when everything finally aligns, the result becomes more than an image. It becomes a record of a living ecosystem and a reminder of why these habitats deserve protection.
