EOS90D EFS 24MM with LH-52 lens cap

Hi again

Weather was good this morning so took camera and dog on what is known locally as The Cliff. The cliff is what remains from what must have been a huge quarry from 18th C when they were building the dark satanic mills during the industrial revolution. My mission was to take all monochrome photos today, in an attempt to highlight the dark grey Yorkshire stone.

I continue to be impressed with my 24MM.

Photo 1 is one of the more pronounced rocks on the cliff. We used to call it Hyawatha after the Red Indians nose!

Photo 2 is a poor attempt at low to high. I lay on my back and pointed the camera skyward with sky interfering with exposure (I think) feedback please

3 is an old well/ horse trough. Still got running water and lots of weeds

4 is an old building erected on the Cliff in what is walled, small park area. Originally built for the workers to go and relax on their day off. The local area is dotted with what we call Recs - short for recreation grounds.

5 another low to high impacted by too much sky

My thoughts on the photography is mixed, as I think I needed to work on the exposure and composition more carefully. Ideally leave the dog at home and take my tripod.

Feedback welcome

LH-52 is the HOOD for the EF-S 24mm, not a cap. And it's not really a hood in the normal sense. It is a light baffle.

But why did you mention it? Do you see something wrong in the images?

I love the brutality of the cliff shots but the horse trough building is the keeper for me. If I were there I would be obsessing. I'd bring my R8 and 15-30mm RF zoom, "Kato" my Pentax K2 loaded with Lomography Purple, my Nikon F loaded with Ilford Delta 3200, and my K1000 loaded with Rollei Infrared. I envy your access.

I think I should go back without dog, but with tripod and more lenses. I'm not sure you can tell, but it's around 10% gradient and has a bit of traffic to contend with.

How would you approach this shot, as I'm still mainly point and shoot with little variation.

Our local back roads still have a lot of the old wells / horse troughs, many serving the Cliff when it was a quarry. So I intend to put a little monochrome collection together. Many of them are in disrepair, but the bodies are in tact.

Thanks

Hi Normadel

Fair question. I had a discussion in this group a short while ago regarding the LH-52 and there didn't seem to be a consensus on what it was, but we felt it was designed mainly to protect the lens. But I thought that's the proper canon lens for EFS 24mm

Its the first time I've heard it called a baffle, but I'm relatively new to this level of photography. So my current modus operandi is to try it out, and share my results. I also have a more conventional hood for the 24mm. But, as one of my previous interlocutors said the LH-52 makes the camera look cool!

Back to today's photos, mostly taken before 12.00am, and I felt there was something amiss in the way the sky was portrayed. It seemed greyed out against the rock and other landscape. It was a bluish sky, and maybe that's how monochrome portrayed it.

I don't know, but would welcome some advice/suggestions on what to do differently.

I hope thats answered your question.

Best
