The Steely-vented Hummingbird (Saucerottia saucerottei) is a dazzling species found in the Andean cloud forests of Colombia. During my visit to La Minga Ecolodge near Cali, located at 1,988 meters above sea level, I encountered this stunning bird in its natural habitat. The rich biodiversity of this region offers endless photographic opportunities, making it a must-visit for nature photographers.
For this shot, I used the Canon R5 paired with the RF 100-500mm lens at full 500mm extension. My camera settings were ISO 400, 1/90 second shutter speed, and an aperture of f/6.7. These settings allowed me to balance light and detail while managing a shallow depth of field to isolate the subject. The advanced image stabilization of the Canon R5 was essential, as shooting handheld at such a long focal length would be challenging otherwise.
The background features soft greens and blurred foliage, achieved through careful composition and the lens’s natural bokeh effect. The bird’s metallic greens and blues shimmered in the diffused light filtering through the canopy. The brief moment when the hummingbird perched allowed for precise framing and a sharp, detailed image.
This photograph is a testament to the power of preparation, technical knowledge, and the importance of being ready when nature offers fleeting opportunities.
