Photographing hummingbirds is always a challenge, and capturing the Sparkling Violetear (Colibri coruscans) in Roncesvalles, Tolima, Colombia, was no exception. This iridescent hummingbird, known for its vibrant blue and green plumage, is a fast-moving species commonly found in the high-altitude regions of the Andes. The ever-changing light of the mountain landscape added another layer of complexity to this shot, requiring precise settings and patience to achieve the right balance of motion and sharpness.
For this image, I used my Canon R5 with an RF 800mm f/11 lens, shooting without an extender. Since hummingbirds move incredibly fast, I set my camera to TV mode and selected a shutter speed of 1/1000 second to freeze the bird in motion while allowing a slight blur in its wings to retain the sense of movement. To compensate for the lighting conditions in the early morning, I adjusted the ISO to 1600, balancing exposure while preserving details in the feathers without excessive noise. Shooting at 800mm allowed me to frame the bird precisely while keeping a soft, natural background that highlights its brilliant coloration.
The Sparkling Violetear is a dominant species in its range, often seen chasing away smaller hummingbirds from feeding areas. In this moment, I observed the bird perched between bursts of high-speed activity, its iridescent plumage flashing in the shifting light. These birds are more than just striking subjects; they play a crucial role in pollination, supporting the biodiversity of the Andean ecosystem.
This photograph captures not just the beauty of the species but also the magic of its environment. Roncesvalles, with its cool mountain air and lush forests, remains one of the most rewarding locations to photograph wildlife in Colombia. Every frame taken here tells a deeper story of the connection between species and their habitat, a reminder of the delicate balance that exists in these high-altitude ecosystems.
