The photos scans on my new ImageFormula R40 are very dark. How can I get more accurate scans?

All my photo scans on the R40 are coming out very very dark.  I'm scanning at 600 dpi, the scanner is clean, my monitor lighting is up.    
When I manually try to edit the photos after scanning I still can't get realistic lighting.  I have a sample of a photo that I scanned 7 years ago with a lesser scanner and it's a much higher more bright a visible scan.  

Any suggestions?
