Anyone Ordering The R5C?

Greetings,

Anyone else considering?  The R5C was not the road I anticipated taking, but I'm tired of waiting and since this body doesn't overheat, I am more confident about it over the standard R5.

Although I am a stills shooter, the Cinema EOS side of the body is intriguing.  Its so much smaller than a C70.  I'm not serious enough about video that I'd miss Clog2.  The body has 16 14 stops so plenty of DR for my use.  Its also not limited to Super35 or 16 (which isn't so much a limitation), but Canon has really stepped up here.  I don't care about ibis.  All of my lenses except 1 are IS and the body has digital IS built in.  I have purchased a bunch of accessories.  Control Ring Adapter, 2 512GB CF ExpressB, 2 128GB UHSII, 2x Watson batteries (Canon was out of stock), and I've not tried Manfrotto batteries yet.

Going to try the AngelBird CFExpress cards and ProGrade for the XD Cards.  I've always used SanDisk so going to try something else.  Both are highly rated.

I also contacted EasyCover in the Netherlands and my contact there has said they do not plan to make a skin for the R5C.  Was hoping for this, but am more excited about a new body.  Haven't pulled the trigger quite yet.  I have a quick business trip and wanted to be back for the arrival.  Plan to wait a week.  If nothing glaring is reported, I will finally move to mirrorless.

Hi Rick,

I have decided to order the Canon RF 24-70mm L F/2.8 IS, as well as a Schneider variable ND filter for that lens.  It was a tough decision, given the cost differential between the Canon and the Sigma, but in the end, the comparative photos that I have seen on the Internet—I will admit, degraded photos posted on the Net are not the best form of evidence—the Canon emerged on top.  I have made mistakes in the past when opting for the least costly approach to many things, and have almost always ended up regretting my decision.  And while cost doesn't always equate with quality, there is a certain sense of comfort that comes with the OEM decision. I will let you know how it turns out, as it should arrive sometime this week.

And thank you once again for the sample images.

Best regards,

Ron

Hi Rick,

I have been testing the Canon RF 24-70 F/2.8 and, so far, have found it to be sharp across the focal plane with good color rendition.  The OIS is exceptional, and the control wheel—that I have assigned to ISO—is helpful.  Only time will tell if it had been worth the extra 1k as compared to the Sigma, but it's done.

Canon just released a firmware update for the R5c that allegedly offers improvement in AF.  I have just installed it, and while I have yet to see a difference in re AF, it has not resolved the issue with the audio page menus which are still grayed out.  In that regard, I am beginning to wonder if the grayed out menus come to life only when an external mic is plugged directly into the camera. Perhaps the manual is misleading when it appears to imply that it should be available for the camera's internal mic?  Anyway, it's not a big deal, since I use the Tascam adapter and a shotgun mic for sound, while the internal mic's recorded tracks get deleted in post.

Best regards,

Ron

Ron,

Thanks again for the helpful info.  I wouldn't expect anything less from L glass.  The 24~70 is extremely versatile (focal length) speaking. All here are aware of Canon's color science.  You made a good choice.  Lens is going to serve you well on this body, and others.

So 1.0.1.1 FW appears to add refinements to the Face tracking AF, also some visual stabilizing when using extenders with a "long" lens.  We already predicted these type of refinements.  The camera is so new.  More good things to come for sure.  I'm still waiting.  Checking everyday.  I'll be jumping on the next release.  5 yrs in the making so I'm due for an upgrade.

Would enjoy seeing any pictures or video you have to share.

Rick

Hi Rick,

I am still in the getting acquainted phase with the R5c, as I continue to work with my C300 Mk III. However, once I have recorded something worthwhile I will be happy to share it with you.

Best regards,

Greetings,

I watched some more videos this weekend and I believe we are going to see (fixes) hopefully for battery optimization and PD from the onboard LP-E6NH.

Forgot his name, but the reviewer does a lot of work with Canon, and has several YT reviews. I'll find it again.  Basically what he did is demonstrate how recording times are all within a few minutes of one another regardless of the resolution or framerate selected.  Clearly 1080P @60fps uses less power than 4K @60fps but runtimes are nearly identical.  The processing load is dramatically reduced.  He further tested with these settings allowing the camera to sit idle (no recording) and got similar results (battery runtime) so there is some "artificial" or better word un-optomized limitations with the existing firmware.  Another example of this is demonstrated when the camera shuts itself down in Cine mode, but of you switch to Photo mode 2 bars of battery power still remain.

Obviously Photo mode requires much less power than Cine mode.  No one disputes this, but it appears that some room for optimization exists.  I have no problem with Canon taking preventative steps to ensure a captured video is not corrupted by allowing you run a battery down to such a low state where it might not be capable of writing a file to the card and risking file corruption.  Plus its not good to discharge rechargeable batteries below a certain voltage anyway.  So once again (and like the plain R5) I believe people are going to see further optimizations with battery life on the R5C.  I just want one.  First place I'm going are the bluffs.  One of the many beaches here in town.

Good Morning Rick,

Thank you for the power consumption info.

I too have noticed that when the battery level indicator in 'video' mode shows almost depleted, switching to photo mode tells a different story entirely.  Furthermore, with the battery grip installed, the percentage of battery charge remaining—for both batteries—can be seen on the 'battery' page in 'photo' mode, but there is no equivalent page in 'video'.  So, hopefully, these issues—and more—will be addressed by Canon.  And in regards to batteries, the Canon LP-E6NH continue to be MIA.  I had ordered a pair weeks ago that are still backordered, and there is no indication as to when they might become available.  I am about to forget about them and order a few more Watson equivalents, of which I own one for the R5c that appears to work well.  I am still convinced that the battery grip is a necessity, both for power and ergonomics, and mine will remain attached in perpetuity.  The PD power bank remains a viable option for powering the camera at all frame rates, and with a 6' cable it easily resides in a pocket.

As an aside, I wonder who had designed this website.  In addition to the fact that it is not user friendly, it does not even function like the least adept word processor. It will not allow one to insert a word between words.  Any interest in switching to a different site???

Off topic.  <Anyone>

What do you use for post (video)?  I used all adobe products until they went subscription.  I'm thinking about DaVinci Resolve Studio.  Their level of development is one of the best in the industry.  $295 for a lifetime license seems like a no brainer.

Hi Rick,

I had dumped all Adobe products years ago for the very same reason—subscription.

I have been using DaVinci Resolve Studio through its various iterations, currently, 17.  There is a learning curve, but there are many video tutorials and those, along with some experimentation, will get you to where you need to be.  In the past I had also used Avid Symphony, but it became a costly investment that I had eventually erased from my drives.  I have also tried Apple Final Cut but, in the end, I find that Resolve is the best.  I have the Tangent Wave 2 controller that I use with Resolve that makes post processing a breeze.  It also works seamlessly with Capture One Pro which I use for my photography.  You can work without the controller, but it does make adjustments more precise.

Regards,

Ron

Here is the video I mentioned.  He's got quite an accent, and I'm not a fan of every video, but he's got some good ones.  Also a decent subscriber base.  KH Cams
