Greetings,
Anyone else considering? The R5C was not the road I anticipated taking, but I'm tired of waiting and since this body doesn't overheat, I am more confident about it over the standard R5.
Although I am a stills shooter, the Cinema EOS side of the body is intriguing. Its so much smaller than a C70. I'm not serious enough about video that I'd miss Clog2. The body has 16 14 stops so plenty of DR for my use. Its also not limited to Super35 or 16 (which isn't so much a limitation), but Canon has really stepped up here. I don't care about ibis. All of my lenses except 1 are IS and the body has digital IS built in. I have purchased a bunch of accessories. Control Ring Adapter, 2 512GB CF ExpressB, 2 128GB UHSII, 2x Watson batteries (Canon was out of stock), and I've not tried Manfrotto batteries yet.
Going to try the AngelBird CFExpress cards and ProGrade for the XD Cards. I've always used SanDisk so going to try something else. Both are highly rated.
I also contacted EasyCover in the Netherlands and my contact there has said they do not plan to make a skin for the R5C. Was hoping for this, but am more excited about a new body. Haven't pulled the trigger quite yet. I have a quick business trip and wanted to be back for the arrival. Plan to wait a week. If nothing glaring is reported, I will finally move to mirrorless.

I have performed some minimal testing with the R5c, and while I had anticipated some visible improvement in resolution from the FF sensor, shooting with the same 4k settings as with the C300 Mk III, that has not been the case. I have yet to try 8K, but that is up next. One other notation, the Tamron EF 24-70mm DC Vi USD G2 lens does not provide AF in video mode, and it appears from what others have found that other 'G2' series lenses will not work either. Tamron support has claimed that they do not test 'CINE' cameras and have no plans to do so, and yet the AF works on my C300 Mk III.

The R5c is no longer light with the battery grip attached, but that was to be expected. I am hopeful that the second battery in the grip will extend shooting time, but it remains to be seen just how much. The grip does prove beneficial with anything larger than the smallest lens attached to the camera, both for balance and hand grip. Since the camera will be used almost exclusively for video, I have no need for the vertical camera positioning that the grip allows for and, accordingly, the grip's buttons and dial will probably never be used. That said, I think that it will become a permanent fixture on this camera.

@Ron,
More helpful information from you. Thank you. I opted for the Sigma 24~70 f2.8 Art. Canon's equivalent at the time didn't have IS. No regrets. I purchased a 150~600mm C with 1.4x extender a year later. Tamron does make great glass. Their G2's are awesome. Their zooms are reversed which was one reason I went with Sigma. I also noted a higher degree of compatibility with newer body's over Tamron. FW can often resolve, but their's was less forthcoming. I have a Rokinon 12mm fisheye thats manual. All of my other lenses are Canon. Are you using a Canon branded RF/EF adapter or Control Ring?
Also are you running v2 FW on your G2:
Model Product Mount Latest Version Last Update Date
A032 | SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD G2 | Canon | Ver.2 | 2021.2.4 |
Ver.2 | This update improves the following issues on the Canon EOS R5 / EOS R6: - Err 70 may occur during shooting. [NOTE] Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is required to attach the lens to Canon EOS R5 / EOS R6 . | Compatible with TAP-in Console update. For details, click here. |
Will be eager to see if the Sigma works when I get mine.

Hi Rick,
Yes, the Tamron firmware is Version 2, and I am using the Canon EF-RF Variable ND filter adapter, but I also have the control ring adapter that I have yet to try. I have the non IS Canon EF 24-70mm F/2.8 which I had purchased because the stabilized F/4 version had been discontinued. I'd bought the Tamron solely for its OIS, and I guess that it works with the R5c—hard to tell—but the AF and OIS work with my C300 MK III, so I will keep it for that camera and use the Canon non IS with the R5c on a monopod, or use the Tamron as manual focus. Apparently, it does perform AF while in photo mode on the R5c as per others. But I was surprised by Tamron's cavalier attitude towards video. The hoards of people who are awaiting the next tranche of R5c's to be shipped, tells me that there is a huge audience for video/cinema, and with this in mind, Tamron is ignoring a lot of potential lens sales by not addressing the problem.

Ron

Ron,
I would expect all Canon R adapters to work the same regarding lens communication. Your ND adapter is their highest end. Hard to say at this point if its the lens or the body. I'm inclined to say lens.
I just upgraded my Sigma 24~70 to latest v2.05. Was on 2.02 previously. I had skipped 2.03 and 2.04 since I still didn't have a mirrorless body, and that is what they primarily addressed. Hardly matters. I may be in for a long haul.

Good morning Rick,
Given that the R5c is touted as a 'cinema' camera, and the fact that its menu system is a partial clone of that found in the C300 Mk III, coupled with the observation that the Tamron lens' AF works with the C300 MK III, I am inclined to suspect that the problem lies with the R5c, and not the lens. Something has been altered in the R5c to make it's lens communication differ from that of the C300 MK III. Nevertheless, I had purchased the lens to be used with the MK III, but with the hope that it would also be functional on the R5c. While MF could be performed while using my customary monopod setup, it is not ideal, and I will probably resurrect the Canon EF 24-70mm non IS for the R5c, and leave the Tamron for the MK III, as I doubt that the problem will ever be resolved.

Ron,
Excellent point. Also surprising to since the AF on all Canon's Cine cameras is first gen, not AF2. You would think it should work. Manual focus for video is fine occasionally, but with the constant improvements being made, AF is more than nice to have. Even if all you were going to do is shoot video.

Hi Rick.
I agree, AF is nice to have, and while I'd begun my video days with MF cine lenses, I have grown accustomed to AF, that I find helpful, even if I have to tweak focus at times. If I had to make a choice between AF and OIS, I would choose AF, since I can usually find other means of stabilization, assuming that a monopod or tripod are not nearby.
There is a somewhat tepid discussion about AF with the R5c vs the R5 on the FM Forum. I think that those who are complaining about the R5c not being as quick as the R5 are missing the distinction between a stills camera and a cine camera, vs a stills camera that can take some video. As I am certain you are aware, professional video cameras do not ordinarily have AF, Canon and Sony have modified that dynamic to some extent, but Arri and others are sans AF. So for me, the R5c's AF is more than good enough with an accommodating lens.
Regards,
Ron

Ron,
Absolutely. When the reviews for the pre-production release starting posting in January, I was amazed how many people were like Canon FAILED.... no ibis, AF I in video, no ND, mini HDMI port.
Quite the contrary. Canon did a fantastic job. They took a powerful R5 Front end and put a new @$$ on it. 8K, no recording limit and now people can shoot under just about any conditions without fear of shut down or lengthy recovery. Plus its super compact. I did see Canon has submitted a patent for a Red Komodo style Cine box.
Also, I liked your response to environmental impact. I have every box for anything I purchased and still own (except TVs) that I might resell later. I've always done this.
Its been a while since I visited the FM forums. Good stuff there, especially the USB PD for external power.

Hi Rick,
Thank you.
I have been considering a PD power bank for 8K/60fps video, but I have yet to find one that doesn't have a host of bad reviews. Furthermore, I'm not sure how I would carry one ... in a pocket, or a belt loop case, if one exists? The optimal solution would be a Gold Mount or 'V'mount battery, but that would pose an even greater mounting issue and would negate the advantage of the R5c's size and weight. But battery life is a real issue that Canon should have addressed with a different battery. Furthermore, the only way that I have found to view any indication of battery charge when the battery grip and 2 batteries are being used, is to switch to photo mode, where there is a menu item that shows battery charge and condition. Why this same menu item isn't available in video mode is baffling. And then there is another quirk. The battery level indicator in video mode shows a lower battery charge for the same point in time than than in photo mode ... that is really odd. I'm sure that there are other issues that I have yet to find.
Like most new cameras to market, the R5c's RAW files are not recognized by Capture one and others. However, a simple batch removal of the letter 'c' from the camera's nomenclature, via EXIF Editor, fixes that problem.
Regards,
Ron
