iX6520 'Unable To Send Data To Printer' error after upgrade to High Sierra

After upgrading MacOS from 10.11.x to 10.13.6 (High Sierra), printing to the iX6520 now generates an error in the printing status box that appears (when opened from the dock): "printing. Unable to send data to printer." The USB connection to the printer is still working, because when I request ink levels via the Canon IJ Printer Utility, it will return those values. But other utility functions that involve printing tests all say "unable to send data to printer," as well. I reinstalled what is listed as the "iX6500 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver.16.40.1.0 (Mac)" from the product support page and reinstalled, but the same problem occurs. I realize the iX6520 is no longer officially supported, but am wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and found a workaround.

Shortly after posting the question above, I noticed that my printer was alternately flashing the blue and amber LEDs on the two front-panel buttons. When I powered it off and restarted the printer, it started printing normally. The only difference I can see from using MacOS 10.11.x is that the printing status dialog now says "printer not connected" when there's no print job happening. But as soon as I print it updates properly with print job status. So at least for now, I think we can consider this question resolved.

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The PIXMA iX6520 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!

You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.

Hope this helps!
