I have a MX340 printer that is no longer supported by Canon support staff. When I send an item to be printed, I get the message . printer not responding.

First question (more to follow) can you print a test page from you printer such as a nozzle check, which you can do from the printer panel itself? If the printer does that without an issue then we can proceed to fix the connection to your device, now come the questions.
What kind of connection you are trying to use? What device and what operating system are you using?
If you do not have a printer cable that can connect your printer to laptop or desktop, consider purchasing one. It make troubleshooting much, much easier and in some cases it is the only way to connect a printer to a device.
