PIXMA MG5420 Printer will not print

Bubba1

I recently upgraded to macOS Catalina 10.15.6 and now my Canon Pixma 5420 Printer will not print. I found several Apple articles that suggest the problem is MG5420 is a 32-bit and macOSCatalina 10.15.6 requires 64-bit. Apple recommends contacting Canon and request a Canon upgrade.  Of course, just my luck the Canon Website is not operating and I can't access tech support.

Does anyone know if an upgrade to 64-bit available for the MG5420 Printer?

Hi Bubba1,

The PIXMA MG5420 supports Airprint, so you should be able to install the Airprint driver.

Please follow these steps:

1.  Click on the Apple in the upper left hand corner and then System Preferences.

2.  Click on Printers & Scanners.

3.  At the bottom of the left side, click the [+] and then "add printer or scanner".  The Add window will appear.

4.  The Canon MG5420 should appear in the list.  Click on it 1 time and at the bottom, next to "Use", please select Airprint.

5.  Click the Add button.

The printer will be installed.

Please note, the PIXMA MG5420 is not supported with macOS v10.15.  You are eligible for Canon's Upgrade Program. This is for out of warranty units which have been diagnosed to require service, or for some reason are incompatible with a new or upgraded system. This option allows you a one-time opportunity to purchase a replacement product, discounted from the list price.

To help you get up and running quickly, we also offer free standard shipping (if the order is completed by 12:30PM ET). If you would like to take part in this option, please call our Sales Department at (866) 443-8002 seven days a week, 8am to Midnight. Let them know you have been working with technical support and the Canon Upgrade Program was offered.

what about a MG5420 printer using Windows software that suddenly doesn't print? Suggestions PLEASE. It worked yesterday, but not today.

Hi BlueBook2,

When you attempt to print, do you get an error?  If so, what error message appears?

Is there an error on the display of your PIXMA MG5420?  If an error shows, what error code is listed at the top of the display?

Are you using your PIXMA MG5420 wirelessly?

or with a USB cable?

Thanks all for the replies. Yes it is true that the MG5420 is not compatible with OS v10.15 and I did get a factory discount for a newer canon model that is compatible with OS v10.15.

I can't help but marvel over what seems to be a slick way to sell more printers.
