Can someone help me? MG5420

HI! I have a Canon Pixma MG5420. I've used the scanner many times with no issues. I used it with no issue today, but realized it scanned as a photo size and not as a document. I changed the scan setting to document and tried again. The home screen then displayed this message "set the PC to start scanning." I have restarted the printer and my computer and tried to download the manual (which I couldn't get to open) and am at a loss. How do I fix this?
