When I turn on my Canon G9, the PowerShot G9 logo appears on the LCD monitor, but, then the screen goes completely black. ???

When that happens has the lens extended & if so does it retract ? This could be a bad battery. Do you have a spare?

The lens does extend and retract.

I would try another battery if you can. If not you'll have to have the battery tested under load somewhere. It sounds like you've got a bad cell in the battery pack.

Ellen,
The LCD monitor can be turned off to allow you to use only the viewfinder above it. You can turn it back on using the DISPLAY button while the camera is powered on.
