tutorial for Powershot SX50HS

I need a tutorial or a step by step instruction that I can follow.  I have downloaded the complete manual and thoroughly read and studied it.  My last Canon was the AE1program purchased in 1984 and used for 20 years, always on the automatic setting.  Since 2004, I have used a Kodak automatic camera.  I am overwhelmed by the settings on this wonderful new camera I just received as a gift 5 weeks ago.  I found one tutorial for setting C1 & C2 to be used respectively for birds in the distance and macro shots.  This is exactly what I need but not exactly the settings as described in the tutorial.  Also, the videographer does not explain how to set the settings but assumes the viewer already knows that.

Thanks,

Linda you should join also!

Not sure why it's necessary to correct someone's English grammar in the middle of an otherwise interesting thread about what I have found to be a very versatile camera.

I am very interested in learning more about using this wonderful camera.  I, too, shoot a lot of birds and just love the range the telephoto gives me.  But, I have scaned the User Guide to find how to compensate for backlighting on some of my bird subjects, as my old camera had a setting that helped, but could find none. I realize now I am going to have to learn about exposure compensation.  Can you point me in the right direction to find out how this is done ?

Thank you in advance !

Yes sure, this is from page 115 in the manual :

Those arrows are on the control dial in the back of the camera.

Thanks, John.  I think I looked at these settings and tuned them up and down, but thought they brightened or dimmed the entire shot.  I didn't actually take a pic.  I will have to go back and experiment.  I want the subject to be bright and not the background. I know I'm just showing how dumb I am, but I really love to take pictures of the many birds, so please be patient with me.

You may find it useful to set the brightness as Spot.

eg. P setting, not Auto.

Press func/set button

Scroll down just beyond Flash

Scroll right to Spot

Press Set.

You could also try using the bracketing exposure facility. (AEB)

Shoot in raw and convert to .jpg with DPP

Thanks, Vetteran.  I will try that suggestion.  Sounds good !

Thanks John_

I knew how to set EC using the +/- icon but I never knew the up arrow would get me there just as well and is easier to push.

Your welcome Linda there is a lot to learn with this or these powerful cameras, then there's the remembering part too ! lol

Coming here helps me with both so helping you and others when I can does help me also.
