Like taking pics of birds - is there any way to avoid the camera focusing on any branch or shrub that is in front of the bird?

Maybe not, can you shift the focus point around? This is one of the advantages of a DSLR, many more options when focusing. They will still focus on whatever is closest in the focus area.
