Turning off without warning when the power consumption goes up [lighting up the LCD, for example] suggests battery failure. Make sure the batteries are fully charged. You might be seeing signs that you need a new battery pack, too.
What exactly happens when you try to download photos? What is the camera doing? What is your PC displaying?
