For a situation like that you might get better (more realistic) results setting the camera to the [P] mode and using the Exposure compensation feature. Images like what you describe would probably look better at an exposure compensation of -1 or even -2. Exposure compensation is laid out on page 69 of your camera's user guide down below:
Years ago was I was told expose for the high lights and let the shadows fall where they may. I use exposure comp to decrease highlights. I have been slightly under exposuring some photos since the film days to bring out colors in bright scenes.
Using my sx70hs I can see the comp with a half sutter push.
