UPDATED May 5:
I apologize to the forum for mixing two different problems. They are unrelated.
Problem #1: User error. I thought I was using a class 6 SD card but I was wrong. The yellow "!" indicates a pathologically slow card. Upgrading to a class 10 resolved this problem.
Problem #2: UNRESOLVED. Red battery indicator comes on prematurely. On a fresh charge, it'll turn red after recording for a couple of minutes. On a partially drained battery, it turns red immediately upon entering movie mode or pressing the record button. Turn the camera off and then right back on in "still" mode and it shows full charge and works fine ... until trying to shoot video. I have not precisely measured recording times but it'll record for at least 20 (maybe 30?) minutes while flashing red.

I am SO disappointed in Canon! I was one of the only ones to send my (2nd) sx280 from NY to CA-with shipping it was out of my hands for 15 days! Brand new $260 camera needs to be sent back for service!!? Unheard of! Well I did it with good faith! Today I received my repaired camera back- and guess what? The paperwork indicates that it was successfully repaired with the firmware updated..... And.....NOPE- the issue is exactly the same and the firmware code is the originalcode- with a 1 no 2....I Called Canon practically hysterical with disappointment and they replied- "sorry, human error happens- please resend the camera back"!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!????
I kinda hope this exact mess-up happens with Gordon Laing's return...would serve Canon well to see it large, reviewer's print. I doubt it will happen, but if it did...

Amazon just got back to me and even though I'm over the 30 days they are taking the camera back and giving me a full refund!!! Time to find a camera that actualy works correctly....

My 280SX is also on the way back to the vendor...just dropped it off at UPS. Good luck to the rest of you. I hope Canon eventually comes through with a fix or you learn to accept what Canon has designed for your photographic needs.

Very strange. The threshold for the red battery icon was about 7 minutes earlier than the OEM Canon battery, but once the red battery occured I could continue to video for about the same time, ie 9 minutes each. With the OEM I could reach 15 minutes with a new battery and then could only video in about 5 minute segment. Cant explain it, perhaps the new batteries need some deep discharge and charging. Im going to stick with the camera, I really like it and press on with Canon for resolution. Besides I have no choice, past the point of return. I will try some more this weekend to see if things differ. I would like to be able to at least have some predictive ability so I know what I have when shooting
