Powershot sx40 flash won’t work

Hi I’ve recently rediscovered my old powershot sx40 but when i attempt to take pictures with the flash on it won’t  work. When i turn the flash on the camera works and captures pictures but when it’s on it won’t capture. Does anyone know how i might fix this issue?
