PowerShot SD790 IS lens error

Hello! I hope someone can give me some guidance on an issue I'm having. I purchased this Powershot from an antique sale yesterday for $5 (insane!). It turns on, battery works fine. I'm getting the error "lens error. restart camera.". The lens seems to be perfectly intact, as I've taken off the front panel of the camera. The lens shield that goes around the lens (silver, says "Canon zoom lens") has fallen off. I believe that's why it keeps giving the error. How should I go about reattaching it? I want to see if I can do it myself before I take it somewhere. It doesn't appear to have any damage to any part of it.

Thanks so much in advance! I'm hoping to get it working before Friday.

For $5.00 you can play all you want trying to fix it and it's no loss.

It's 16 years old and these pocket point & shoots were never good candidates for professional repair except at Canon.
