PowerShot G11 - Formatting a New Card

I am trying to format a new card in my PowerShot G11, but Format is Grayed out - how do I access it?

Can you take a picture with the camera?

Two things to check:
1. Is the card write-protected?  Check for a small slot on the side of the card with a slider and see if it set to protect. If it is the camera cannot attempt to format the card.

2. Is the card a micro-SD card and an adapter?  These are problematic, as the mechanical connection from the micro card to the adapter can cause all sorts of issues.
