Although I've had the camera for a wee while it has hardly been used at all and I took it with me the other day for wedding but couldn't take any pictures at all because eof this fault.

The camera is quite old, over a decade. The life expectancy of the batteries are typically 4-6 years Those inexpensive point-and-shoot cameras are not designed for easy repairs. It's done and gone, most likely.
