Is there an easy calculation for equivalent zoom for the SX720HS?
Alternatly: looking at the EXIF file how do I find out from the focal length what is the 35mm equivalent?

I don't know what happened to my answer.
The crop factor multiplier is 5.6, so take the actual focal length and multiply by 5.6.
So 4.3*5.6 is 24.1mm(eq) and 172 * 5.6 is 963 mm(eq)
If you multiply by 6 you will be off by 10% which is probably close enough.

You are welcome.
I don't know how the digital zoom gets figured into this, if at all. I would turn off the digital zoom, anyway. 8^)
