Canon Power Shot A3100 IS camera

I have a Canon Power Shot A3100 IS camera from about 2010.  I have downloaded photos to my laptops for years.  I have a 9 month old MacBook Air computer.  I just attempted to download my new photos from the Canon camera to my computer, but the cable that came with the camera has a U that does not fit into my laptop.  I do not know what to do or where to seek help.

I suspect that the camera cable is the square USB-A, while the new laptop is the oval USB-C. You will need to get a USB-C to USB-A adapter. I can't link, but the Apple model number is MJ1M2AM.
