Canon G7 X MARK III - catastrophic power failure after 6 uses

We have a G7 Mark III that has been used as a backup camera only. It has only been used on 6 occasions but is out of warranty. It has been kept in a protective case, with a silicone cover, has never been dropped or been wet and is in pristine physical condition. The last time we tried to use this camera it wouldn't power on. We bought a new battery and tried everything to get it to start. Eventually we sent it to Canon and have been told that the main PCB and Optical Assembly needs to be replaced. This is clearly a manufacturing defect and no fault of ours. The quoted repair cost is nearly $600!! Has anybody else had similar problems with the same model and if so is there a reasonable workaround to fix it? There seems to be a lot of people on this and other forums having similar problems with this model. If Canon knows this is a problem with this model but are happy to leave customers high and dry then this will be my last Canon product.

Lots of folks write to this forum asking for quite a while when this model will be back in stock. Maybe it's not made anymore , and maybe because it's had problems.

Perhaps, but anything made by the hand of man can and will eventually fail. That's why Canon offers a year warranty because most cameras will fail if they are going to fail within that year. In your case you did not use it a year's worth in a year's time period. That's unfortunate but it happens.

I have a Powershot G15 that has got to be 15+years old and still going strong. Luck of the draw, I guess. I know that doesn't help. The choice is, if you want a Canon G7 X MARK III can you buy one for $600 bucks? If you choose that route when you get ti back, use it. You will get a new warranty.
