Cannon sx720 HS night pictures?

I have had my Cannon sx720 HS for awhile and absolutely love it.  The one thing I have not figure out is how to take good night pictures.  I was trying to get the northern lights last night and it did not work.  Does anyone know how?

You can try "shooting evening scenes without a tripod" which will average 3 shots.

The important thing is to practice *before* you need it.
