Battery problem

I have a PowerShot A490 which indicates that the batteries need to changed following the insertion of new AA alkaline batteries.  What could be the problem?

Just to get the obvious out of the way...

Are you sure you are inserting them the right direction?

Are you positive your "new" batteries are good?  Tried them in another device?

You don't see any stuff on the terminals of either the batteries or in the camera?
