Is there a picyure limit of 255 with the PowerShot SX200IS?

I'm using a Dell windows 8.1 computer. I have transferred the pictures by removing the card and having it inserted into the card reader slot. I also transferred the pictures by using the USB cable. The same result. Only 255 pictures appear.

Yes try a new card the rest of the sectors on your old card might be corrupted meaning they are there but won't allow any storage to them

I spoke to Canon and they said there are no updates.

An 8 GB memory card should give you enough storage space for roughly 1000 8MB files.

There's another test you can try while the card is in your computer. It should show up under My Computer or This Pc, the SD card. Right click on it, go to Properties then Tools. There you will see a Scan test to scan the card for errors...maybe that will turn up a clue as to what is going on.

Thanks for all the feedback. I just ordered a new (different brand) card on Amazon and I'll try that scan.

Something that has been floating around in my head is the possibility that the camera cannot write more than 255 files to a single folder. Because of file naming conventions, many Canon DSLRs cannot write more than 9999 files to a folder.

Great idea about folders! I think that may be the solution. I just created a second folder. The first folder was 100canon and the second folder is named 101canon. I'll start adding pictures when i get some time and see if I get 255 in each folder. I wonder how many folders I can create. That solution would be great especially when I go on vacation and create a folder for each day. Thanks again and I hope that works.

According to page 140 of the Instruction Manual, the camera can only store up to 2000 images in a single folder.
The above image was taken from page 57 of the "Software Starter Manual", as referred to in the Instruction Manual.
