A1400 - Digital IS or Digital Zoom?

The digital IS on this camera works by taking three shots in sucession and combinig them (in various ways).

When digital IS is selected, only optical 1:5 zoom is available; the 20X digital zoom is disabled.

If a tripod is used for a 20X shot, is it likely to be any better than a blown up 5X digital IS shot with camera held to the face?

My limited experiments produce sharper IS blowups than equivalent 20X shots. Is this typical?

If you are saying that you get sharper photos using a tripod, than that should be expected.

I am the OP.

Additional testing shows that on digital IS, the camera lowers the resolution from "L" to "M." So whatver sharpness you gain by combining three images is moe than lost in resolution. Didn't see anything about this in the manual.
