imac from 2008 OS 10.11.2 Connected to mx922 with usb cable.
Scanner has worked on this config in the past

Hello.
Try turning the printer off and back on, then restart your Mac. Once this has been done, open the IJ Scan Utility program and try scanning to test the unit.
