imageCLASS MF656Cdw Computer can't communicate with scanner

Cannot communicate with any of the scanners. The scanners may not be connected, or may be turned off

I'm normally not so negative, but GOSH I HATE CANON! I just bought a Canon MF656CDW and have had problems with it since day 1. Why did I ever switch to Canon?! If I hadn't spent all this money on this printer and a ton of money on toner cartridges, I'd throw this brand new printer in the garbage! I'd like to demand my money back and GO BACK TO HP PRINTERS!

I spent almost two hours on the phone with a Canon tech getting everything going fine. That lasted for two days and now I'm having issues!

Please help me! Don't tell me to reinstall the drivers, restart the computer/printer, yada yada yada! I've done all this with a specialist a few times during my two hour phone conversation last time I called!

Thanks for joining the conversation, KPed24!

So that the Community can help you better, we need to know exactly which operating system is running on your computer (i.e. Windows or macOS, and which version thereof). That, and any other details you'd like to give will help the Community better understand your issue!

If this is a time-sensitive matter, click HERE search our knowledge base or find additional support options HERE.

Thanks and have a great day!

I'm experiencing the same issue.  All of a sudden I cannot send a print job to my MF650CDW printer over wifi.  Tried reinstalling the printer driver, but the driver cannot find the printer on the network.  However the phone app gives me an IP address for the printer, and allows me to access the remote panel webpage for the printer.  I can still print from my phone.  I checked Windows Defender Firewall and my installer is allowed outbound connections.  Same with my printer driver.  My windows version is  Windows 10 22H2 build 19045.4780.

DerrickO,

While you are fine to watch this thread, I'd like to ask that you please start your own topic.  Co-mingling threads and requests for assistance make it difficult for those of us trying to help.  This is because hardware, operating systems, connection methods etc are different.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Danny!

Over the past few days, I obviously gave up on trying to get the printer connected to my computer and simply connected it through my router. I've been able to print everything I needed. However, today is the very first time I've needed to use the scanner feature. Well, with me being back on the forum looking for answers, unsuprisingly it didn't work.

I'm using macOS Sonoma Version 14.6.1

Thanks!

The message I receive from Canon MF Scan Utility when trying to scan is Cannot communicate with any of the scanners. The scanners may not be connected, or may be turned off.

Hi Kped24,

I'd like you help with your issue(s).  Please respond to Danny's question(s), and also provide your connection method (wired, wireless, USB?)  I own 2 Canon lasers (no issues) and believe I can help.  😃

Hi Kped24,

So you are using a wireless connection with OSX Sonoma.

You can print, but are unable to scan.  Out of curiosity, if you use the ADF or put something on the platen can you copy using the printers LCD panel?

If so, I'd assume the hardware is fine.

The link below is for the printers support portal.

https://www.csai.canon.com/support/p/color-imageclass-mf656cdw

I need to confirm the software that you installed.

You need this package to print.

UFR II/UFRII LT Printer Driver & Utilities for Mac V10.19.19 [macOS 10.14.6 - macOS 14.5]

Scanner Driver & Utilities for Mac V2.15.15 [macOS 10.14.6 - macOS 14.5]

Now tell me about your network?  Are you using standard ISP issued hardware?  Are you using a mesh system in conjunction with this?

What is the IP address of your printer?

I'm traveling at the moment so there may be a short delay in my response.

Hello!

Before reading everything that I'm about to write pertaining to your questions, please remember, I was on the phone with a Canon tech for a couple of hours. She struggled and struggled because Canon's software doesn't work well with Mac Sonoma, obviously, TONS of people are having issues because the software has too many bugs. We downloaded everything needed from the USA Canon website and made sure I was eventually able to print and scan wirelessly. After two days I was able to do none of this. Another piece of information, I'm using a brand new computer and new fiber optic internet. I'm using a Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 router.

So you are using a wireless connection with OSX Sonoma? The printer did work using wireless connection to OSX Sonoma for about two days. It quit, and I gave up on trying to fix it, so I connected it directly to my router using a ethernet cord. For the past few days I have been able to print.

You can print, but are unable to scan.  Out of curiosity, if you use the ADF or put something on the platen can you copy using the printers LCD panel? I am unable to scan to the computer or a USB stick. I can, however, copy using the ADF and on the platen. The quality isn't very good and the colors are very off from the original.

I need to confirm the software that you installed.

You need this package to print.

UFR II/UFRII LT Printer Driver & Utilities for Mac V10.19.19 [macOS 10.14.6 - macOS 14.5]

And this package to scan.
Scanner Driver & Utilities for Mac V2.15.15 [macOS 10.14.6 - macOS 14.5] I'm not going to download anything from this link simply because it's probably the exact same one that the Canon tech had me download and I don't want to risk losing my ability to print.

Now tell me about your network?  Are you using standard ISP issued hardware?  Are you using a mesh system in conjunction with this? When the internet installer was at my home, he recommended that I use my current router since it is way better than what they were going to give me. I am not using a mesh system in conjunction with this.

What is the IP address of your printer? 192.168.1.6
