I just picked up my new Imageclass mf654cdw And the first few test pages were fine. I'm trying to print front and back pages on cougar digital paper. One side comes out acceptable but when printing the other side the blacks are super splotchy. I tried playing with a few of the settings but I cannot solve the issue. Why does one side print fine but the other side doesn't? The paper is double-sided as I've tried testing multiple pages with the same result

197gsm. It prints and feeds fine in the manual feed tray before you tell me (it's not on the supported list). It's a consistency problem. I tried changing some settings all with various results. Seems to only do it on the second side print.

Greetings,

Here's what I suggest.  The heaviest weight supported paper is 73 lbs.  A GSM of 197 is approx 72lbs.  The calculation is slightly different depending on the type of paper, cover vs text.  I don't know what the cougar paper is rated as.

Your printer has a 3 yr warranty with Canon.  You mentioned it was new.  I suggest you contact Canon Support.  If the paper is supported, they can tell you what settings to use, or they can identify the consistency issue and provide next steps.  If you haven't registered your device, this is an important step.
