i-Sensys MF655Cdw duplex scan every back page is all black

Can anybody help with this?

I've got a new printer which will scan to OneDrive folders in either black and white or in colour. I followed Cannon instructions and set this up so there are button on the display for each.

I've tried setting up buttons to do exactly the same but duplex. When I try to scan duplex, through the feeder, the back of ever page is completely black for every piece of paper scanned.

I installed the Cannon MF Scan Utility from Cannon's website but it doesn't have a duplex option as I've seen on screenshots posted by others.

The model (as per the badge on the front of it) is definitely i-Sensys MF655Cdw.

To the best of my knowledge, the ADF on the MF655Cdw is simplex (one-sided).  The 657 is duplex.
