I own a Canon MF229DW and a Netgear Nighthawk X6 AC3200 router. I set up my network printer but it was constantly put into 'Paused' mode and I couldn't figure out why. I looked online and found that other people were having the same problem but nobody had an answer or explanation. After days of experiments I discovered that the problem wasn't my Canon printer but was instead a setting in my Netgear router. The router didn't correctly recognize my printer as such. I fixed this by downloading Netgear Genie, going to the Network Map page and setting my printer to "Printer" instead of "Unknown Device". That solved the problem for good.
If you would like step by step instructions with screenshots I made a page to walk you through the fix here. This took me days to figure out so I hope it helps someone else!
