Cannot scan from my MF654CDW to my Windows 11 computer

I am able to print from my computer to the printer but in trying to scan a document, I get an error message on my screen that says,

"Cannot communicate with the scanner.  The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off.  Check the scanner status and try again.

Scanner driver will be terminated"

The computer and printer are both connected via wi-fi so there's no cable used.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

This is what solved my scanner connection issues for me on my Canon MF752Cdw.

  1. Open device manager, go to imaging devices and expand them.
  2. Right-click on the scanner and choose "disable device".
  3. Right-click again and choose "update driver".
  4. Click on "Browse my computer for drivers".
  5. Choose "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer".
  6. Click on the model that is listed (or the one that is highlighted if you have multiple items).
  7. Click Next. The driver is re-installed
  8. Click Close.
  9. Restart your computer.

After executing these steps, the scanner should have a connection again.
A big shoutout to Dale1973 who came up with this solution.

Hello.

So I encountered this error today with an imageCLASS MF656CDW multi function unit.  After some crazy stumbling around I found this combination to work on a Windows 11 24H2 PC with all current windows updates:

1. Install the Master Driver utility package (mastersetupv110) from the canon website
2. After this is installed, run the scanner utility package if you want to scan from your machine (winmfscanutilityv12102).  If not skip this step.
3. Open device manager -> imaging devices -> canonMFmodel.  Right-click and uninstall (but do not remove the driver package).
4. Download and run the [Windows 64bit] MF656Cdw/ MF654Cdw/ MF653Cdw/ MF652Cw MFDrivers (Generic Plus UFR II / Generic FAX / ScanGear) installer (MF650CMFDriverV720W64) package from the canon website
5.  Follow all prompts and install all components that you plan on using (i unchecked faxing and the ability to install the service).
6. Once this finishes, go back to device manager -> imaging devices -> CanonMF model
7. Right-click and "Update Driver" -> Browse my computer for drivers -> Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer
8. For the 656CDW, you will see 2 drivers.  One with a 2023 date and one with a 2021 date.  Select the 2021 driver and click next to install/use it.

Once this is done, scanning was working again.  Whether its directly from the printer or using the app or hard wired or setup wirelessly.  Scanning was working great again.  Oddly enough it looks like the last driver update was yesterday, but this driver doesn't work.  Hopefully this helps someone save several hours, as it took me a while to get this to work 😞

This combination worked for me without any issues.  Hopefully it works for you.
