How do I clear this error message  "Release the scanner lock switch and turn the power off and back on."  

I have a MP830 printer. I have tried several times turning the printer off, waiting 10 minutes and then turning back on. I keep getting the same message that the scanner is locked but It is not. Help! Thanks very much.
