What second R body would you hire for Safari?

I have a Canon R6, and these RF lenses: 100-500L, 70-200L f/4, 24-105L f/4, plus 35 and 50mm non L primes.

I am going on Safari next year in Tanzania and Kenya. Obviously bringing the R6 and 100-500 and probably the 24-105.

I’m planning to hire a second body for redundancy and would be open to hiring a lens. Because of luggage dimensions and weight limits I’m not too keen on hiring something huge lens wise.

If it makes a difference I’ll be at private game reserves.

Hello,

Here are some suggestions for your safari photography gear:

Camera Body
Canon EOS R5: High resolution and fast autofocus.
Canon EOS R6 Mark II: Similar to your R6 with improvements.
Lens Recommendations
Canon RF 100-500mm: Perfect for wildlife.
Canon RF 24-105mm: Versatile for landscapes and general shots.
Canon RF 70-200mm: Lightweight and great for mid-range shots.
Additional Lens to Consider
Canon RF 100-400mm: Compact and lightweight, offering good reach.
These options should help you stay within luggage limits while ensuring you have the right gear for amazing safari photos.

I hope the information will be helpful for you

Best regards

Chris wright

The RF 100-400 is the most performance per weight/size you can hope for (and it's extremely inconspicuous!)

Greetings ,

For a second body R5/R52.

On the rare occasions I've shot wildlife, I've always found having as much reach as possible can help.  Sometimes this can depend on safety and how close your guide can get you.  Size and weight does have to be considered though.

I also like Chris's recommendations. RF100 400 and RF70-200 f2.8.

Seems like you are living my dream. I'm far from a photography expert but I would suggest having good quality zoom lenses. Remember, many of the animals you will see are still wild. Having read a number of books on African safaris, one must be prepared for the unexpected. Have a good  time and safe trip to and from Africa.

The two ways to get more out of your lenses are higher resolution to crop into like the R5 or taking advantage of APS-C 1.6 crop factor.  I do all of my distance day work with an R7 and the amazing RF 100-500 you'll be carrying and the 1.6 multiplier gets you an effective 800mm on the long end.  The R7 also has a respectable 32MP to crop into if you need to cheat a little that way as well.

Definitely wanted to throw that body in the mix because APS-C is so often left out of serious discussions but I've used them since the early 2000's for this kind of work.

These pics are from the R7 paired with the RF 100-500 doing a bit of what you might be looking for:

Agree.  Trevor @Tronhard has done some comparisons shooting with the same lens on his R5 in Full and Crop mode.  With the ample resolution of the R5/2 you'd have more than enough resolution to take advantage of crop mode with the RF100-500.
