Hello jakopasjohn,
An avatar is the image that appears under your name on your posts. You are automatically given an avatar when you join the community, but you can change it to something else if you prefer!
Once you are signed in, just click on "My Settings," and then the "Avatars" tab. You can then choose the avatar you would like, or you can upload your own.
