Advice for Camera Security in the City

Can anyone here share how you keep your high-end camera safe while taking photos a busy city like New Orleans?

a small lens helps a camera get attention; i also carry a back-up P&S with a fast aperture. good luck!

I use a sling style backpack, Black rapids sports breathe carry system or a good strong wrist strap tethered to the body for carrying in busy urban environments.  Do not set your camera or bag down, not even for a moment.  For backpacks you can use a simple TSA or cable lock to keep zippered compartments closed.  Head on a swivel, be aware of your surroundings at all times.  You won't have any problems.

Don't ever let go of it, even if it's on a strap. A street thief can rip it right off you.

I use Peak Design’s Capture Clip system. When using a back pack the camera is securely clipped into place on the left shoulder strap. When using only the camera it’s clipped into their belt holder. Cross body sling its clipped onto that. At all times in a city I also use a their cross body camera strap; the wider one (Slide) that’s resistant to be being cut with a knife. In addition I use a clutch strap when actually taking photos. It locks pretty securely around your hand; enough so that when using smaller sized lenses it’ll stay affixed even if you loosen your grip on the camera body. 

As a side note, if you don’t already have it, you might consider getting insurance for your gear. A homeowner’s policy is often very limited. I have all my gear insured thru State Farm (I have no affiliation with them). Also be sure to register your camera and lenses with Canon and if stolen report it immediately not only to the police, but to Canon as well. That alone might not help getting it back, but it’ll make it harder for them or whoever buys it to get it serviced. Also take photos of your gear and be sure to include pics of the serial numbers too.

Hi JeffXB,

You gave me excellent advice; I just bought the Peaks Capture Clip System. I have registered my equipment with Canon: the camera body, my 24-105 MM f/2.8 L, and 50 f/1.2 MM  L lens. I will now take photos of my equipment and serial numbers for my records and for insurance.
